Surreal talk: ArtisTree to host landmark exhibition of René Magritte’s photos and films

Rene Magritte at ArtisTree

132 original photographs and 8 films by the influential 20th century surrealist René Magritte will be exhibited at ArtisTree in Taikoo Place, the first time they will have been displayed in Asia, from January 2018.

The immersive exhibition, René Magritte: The Revealing Image – Photos and Films, is presented by Swire Properties and Ludion, an independent European art book publisher, in partnership with the Magritte Foundation Belgium. Created between 1914-1967, the photos and films exhibited at this landmark exhibition will seek to shed new light on the great surrealist’s creative process and thinking. A series of educational programmes will accompany the exhibition to offer further insight into one of the 20th century’s most important artists. Admission and all activities are free of charge, in line with Swire Properties’ efforts to create vibrant and sustainable communities by integrating arts and culture into everyday life.

Many of the original photographs and films were only discovered in the 1970s, more than ten years after his death, and have been loaned from private European collections, the Magritte Foundation, and Museum of Photography Charleroi in Belgium. Director of the Museum of Photography Charleroi, Xavier Canonne, has curated the exhibition with the aim of offering visitors a glimpse of an informal Magritte, his family and circle of friends.
