Swire Properties unveils details of Hong Kong Arts Month programme for 2018

Remy Rough Swire Properties Arts Month 2018

Live urban art, an art exhibition accompanied by live music and an artistic MTR takeover form part of the world-class art programme presented by Swire Properties across Hong Kong this March.

As the eyes of the art world return to Hong Kong, Swire Properties have announced a series of exhibitions, art installations, live street art and performances at Pacific Place and Taikoo Place. Swire Properties will also host events at Art Basel in Hong Kong, partnering with the show for the sixth consecutive year. Highlights include:

Jim Lambie, Spiral Scratch
Pacific Place, 19 March – 8 April 2018
Scottish contemporary artist and 2005 Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie’s new work, Spiral Scratch, will bring a sensory dimension to Pacific Place. This site-specific work juxtaposes an intricate, rhythmic floor pattern with a collection of 15 ladders painted in vivid hues. These commonplace objects stretch upwards from the floor in luminously coloured columns, stripped of all utility with mirrors installed between the rungs. The result is a kaleidoscopic interaction of colour, shape and form, which gives rise to surprising new perspectives.

Notating Beauty that Moves – Music at an Exhibition
ArtisTree in Taikoo Place, 3 – 29 March 2018
Sponsored by Swire Properties’ ArtisTree, Notating Beauty That Moves – Music at an Exhibition is an exhibition and performance series presented by Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and curated by two leading Hong Kong artists: award-winning sound artist Samson Young, and Yang Yeung, Founding Member and Artistic Director of soundpocket. Exploring the relationship between the motion of the musicians and the notation on the score, the exhibition will showcase 36 artworks ranging from works-on-paper and drawings, to moving images, texts, photography and paintings. The collection has been sourced from around the world, and highlights include works by avant-garde composers Cathy Berberian, John Cage, Mark Applebaum, Morgan O’Hara, and Samson Young. Accompanying the exhibition will be a series of concerts featuring members of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the acclaimed Australian group, Ensemble Offspring.

Urban Art at Taikoo Park, Taikoo Place
Live painting will take place 22 – 24 March
Live Urban Art is Swire Properties’ celebration of street art at Taikoo Place. Three British artists, Phil Ashcroft, Graeme Brusby (aka Xenz) and Duncan Jago (aka Mr Jago) (pictured above), will paint murals in Taikoo Park. The live painting is set to infuse the outdoor public space with street art’s vibrant energy while showcasing the art form. The murals are composed of smaller canvasses that will be individually sold to raise funds for the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation’s programme for disadvantaged and underprivileged youth. This engagement will be held in collaboration with leading architecture and design firm Aedas.

Remi Rough at Quarry Bay MTR
From 23 March 2018
British artist Remi Rough (pictured above) will inject energy and new life into the Taikoo Place exit at Quarry Bay MTR station with a dramatic and site-specific new geometric mural. By reimagining this public space, Rough will create a vibrant and vivid travelling experience, stimulating Hong Kongers on their everyday commute, and encouraging a fresh engagement with the space. The work has been commissioned by Swire Properties and MTR, in partnership with Aedas.

Swire Properties Arts Month 2018 - Hong Kong architect Stanley Siu

Art Basel in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Swire Properties VIP Lounge & Dialogue Series at Art Basel in Hong Kong, 29 – 31 March 2018
Designed by award-winning Hong Kong architect and Founder of Daydreamers Design Stanley Siu (pictured above), the Swire Properties VIP Lounge, Cumulus, is a free-flowing space inspired by the natural beauty and grandeur of clouds in the sky. Siu is an advocate of nurturing the relationship between public spaces and communities, and the role pavilions can have in generating conversation. In this latest project the structure is enveloped by light fabric folds that create a space where concepts, thoughts and experience all converge to create change. The lounge, located on Level 1 Concourse, will serve as the venue for the much-anticipated Swire Properties Dialogue Series, a specially curated programme of talks and panel discussions by leading art-world figures including Tim Marlow (Artistic Director, Royal Academy of Arts), Daan Roosegaarde (Dutch artist and innovator), Nicholas Baume (Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund) and Conrad Shawcross (British artist), among others. The series will stimulate meaningful dialogues across art, design and architecture, to encourage the exchange of ideas that lead to more enriched and sustainable communities.

Swire Properties’ extensive programme for Hong Kong Arts Month 2018 is testament to their belief that art plays an important role in sustaining vibrant communities. The company has a rich history of creating and hosting an array of arts and culture events, and is continuing efforts to enrich, engage and foster creativity in people’s everyday lives through their exciting Arts Month programme.
