Gallery Weekend Beijing heads into third edition driven by exponential growth and new international partnership

Gallery Weekend Beijing 2019 - Hive Center for Contemporary Art

Gallery Weekend Beijing (GWBJ) is pleased to announce its third edition, taking place from 22-29 March (closed 25 March) 2019 and hosted in venues across 798 Art District, Caochangdi Art District, and Tianzhu Town in Shunyi District.

This year, 26 participating galleries and non-profit institutions will take part, an almost 20% increase from the previous year, with new participants including Faurschau Foundation, Hunsand Space, Song Art Museum, Star Gallery and Tabula Rasa Gallery. The selection is made by the Academic Committee and GWBJ, following a thorough evaluation of the large number of participation applications.

“Our second edition in March 2018 saw a vast national and international audience of visitors, and we are determined to build on the platform of that success, and increase our international significance as a contemporary event on the international art calendar,” says Amber Wang, Director of Gallery Weekend Beijing.

For the first time, GWBJ 2019 will launch the Visiting Sector in collaboration with Zurich Art Weekend, and invites established mid-sized galleries Galerie Eva Presenhuber and Mai 36 Galerie to showcase solo exhibitions in professional exhibition spaces provided by 798 Art District. The unique exchange seeks to establish a cross-cultural dialogue where thoughts on the current opportunities and challenges, the outlook on future prognoses, and a togetherness will be encouraged in the form of talks and panel discussions.

The Up&Coming Sector will display a curated group exhibition, dedicated to young Chinese talent. “In our current information society, emerging artists of today are the first generation to be fully immersed in a globalised and contextualised art world which can often determine the flexibility of their paths at an unprecedented speed and rate of exposure, thus, making their observation more thrilling, but their support and guidance all the more crucial,” said Wang of the new sector.

The Public Sector will showcase outdoor projects, such as larger scale sculptures and installations, and encourage reflection on forms, meaning and purpose of Public Art.

During the VIP Days (22-24 March), talks and panel discussions on relevant topics will enable an intellectual and professional exchange of ideas between institutions, artists, collectors, curators, critics and art lovers. An attractive frame-program will accompany the invited clientele throughout the three exclusive days.

The Public Days (26-29 March) will present an introductory and educational program for the general public, where workshops, guided tours and a children’s pop-up atelier will be set up to gently guide the public’s focus towards contemporary art.

Together with galleries and institutions across the city, GWBJ 2019 will tailor the needs of each and every visitor, and create a meaningful art experience for all participants.
